Education
The Haywood
County public school system includes two high
schools, an alternative high school, an Early
College school, three middle
schools and nine elementary schools, including one
year-round school. Elementary schools provide
classes for kindergarten through fifth grade; middle
schools provide classes for grades six through
eight, and high school for grades nine through
twelve.
In recent years, North Carolina
has been a national leader in educational initiative
and leadership, and Haywood County Schools have
consistently performed above state and regional
averages in all academic measures.
Every school in Haywood County —
and 98 percent of all classrooms — has Internet
access. The school system’s area-wide network proxy
server provides e-mail for all teachers and
administrators. It also ensures safe, filtered
access to the Internet.
Haywood County also serves more
than 1,000 students in special needs programs each
year. The students range in age from 3 to 21 years
old and have varying degrees of disabilities.
Services are provided according to each student’s
individual needs.
Related services, such as
physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech,
language, assistive technology, psychological
services, education interpreting and special
transportation, are provided to help students
demonstrate their true abilities.
The school system employs 122
staff members to meet the unique and individual
needs of special needs students.
Haywood County School’s arts
curriculum includes four distinctive subject areas —
dance, music, theater arts and visual arts.
The county’s private
schools include, Bethel Christian Academy, St. Joseph
Academy, Haywood Christian Academy and Carolina Academy of Arts and Sciences,
provide Christian and academic education for
children from kindergarten through grade 12.
Haywood County high school
students can take classes at Haywood Community
College in Clyde as part of several dual enrollment
programs offered. One program allows students to
begin their college education early by earning
tuition-free college credit. Another provides enrollment in
academic, technical and advanced vocational courses
not otherwise available through the secondary
education system.
