Education

The Haywood County public school system includes two high schools, an alternative high school, an Early College school,  three middle schools and nine elementary schools, including one year-round school. Elementary schools provide classes for kindergarten through fifth grade; middle schools provide classes for grades six through eight, and high school for grades nine through twelve.

In recent years, North Carolina has been a national leader in educational initiative and leadership, and Haywood County Schools have consistently performed above state and regional averages in all academic measures.

Every school in Haywood County — and 98 percent of all classrooms — has Internet access. The school system’s area-wide network proxy server provides e-mail for all teachers and administrators. It also ensures safe, filtered access to the Internet.

Haywood County also serves more than 1,000 students in special needs programs each year. The students range in age from 3 to 21 years old and have varying degrees of disabilities. Services are provided according to each student’s individual needs.

Related services, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech, language, assistive technology, psychological services, education interpreting and special transportation, are provided to help students demonstrate their true abilities.

The school system employs 122 staff members to meet the unique and individual needs of special needs students.

Haywood County School’s arts curriculum includes four distinctive subject areas — dance, music, theater arts and visual arts.

The county’s private schools include, Bethel Christian Academy, St. Joseph Academy, Haywood Christian Academy and Carolina Academy of Arts and Sciences, provide Christian and academic education for children from kindergarten through grade 12.

Haywood County high school students can take classes at Haywood Community College in Clyde as part of several dual enrollment programs offered. One program allows students to begin their college education early by earning tuition-free college credit. Another provides enrollment in academic, technical and advanced vocational courses not otherwise available through the secondary education system.
