MedWest-Haywood was originally the Haywood County Hospital, built in 1927 as the first county owned hospital in the state. The current hospital was completed in 1979 and in 1997 the hospital’s name was changed from Haywood County Hospital to Haywood Regional Medical Center, reflecting the growth of services and expansion of care to neighboring counties.
Haywood Regional Medical Center joined an affiliation with Harris Regional Hospital and Swain County Hospital, with the official collaboration effective Jan. 1, 2010.
MedWest-Haywood has an award-winning health and fitness center, located on the same campus, that is equipped with complete lines of cardiovascular and strength equipment and offers more than 70 group exercise programs and strength training classes. The center features a six-lane indoor heated pool, walking track, massage therapy, spa services, steam rooms, saunas, gymnasium, racquetball courts, rehabilitation services, diabetes treatment, Osteoporosis Center, and child-care center for members.
MedWest continues to respond to the needs of the community, a behavioral health unit is now available, a new Urgent Care Center in Canton is underway and there are plans to construct an outpatient surgery center on the main campus. Construction is underway on the new Homestead Hospice & Palliative Care inpatient facility on property adjacent to MedWest-Haywood.
MedWest-Haywood offers the Center for Joint Replacement, a wing dedicated to orthopedic care. The radiology department has two CT systems and two MRI systems, as well as digital mammography and a state-of-the-art ultrasound system to offer high quality images.
MedWest-Haywood is the third largest employer in Haywood County, with 949 dedicated employees. MedWest is affiliated with Carolinas HealthCare System (www.carolinashealthcare.org), one of the leading healthcare providers in the Southeast, with 33 hospitals in North and South Carolina.
The hospital and its employees positively affect almost every aspect of community life.
Direct community benefits include charity care, the unreimbursed costs for treating Medicare/Medicaid patients, donations to the United Way and other agencies, and non-billed services (i.e. The Good Samaritan Clinic).
The community benefits MedWest-Haywood provides reach much farther than direct medical care. The hospital is part of the fabric, a key component of the infrastructure of the community. Saving lives, restoring health and providing jobs are just the beginning of MedWest-Haywood’s contributions to the community.
