With a workforce of approximately 26,000, Haywood
County is in the midst of change. Manufacturing and
Agriculture are no longer the backbone, while the
driving force of the economy has become real estate,
construction, health care, tourism, education and
services. The unemployment rate is the lowest
since the year 2000 when a few manufacturing
businesses closed their doors. The counties largest
employers include Evergreen Packaging: Blue Ridge Paper Products, Haywood
County Schools, Haywood Regional Medical Center,
County Government, Lake Junaluska Assembly and
Haywood Vocational Opportunities. A growing number
of small businesses and entrepreneurs are creating
new niche businesses, putting many displaced employees back to work. |
